Our Engineering Team

Daniel B. Wolanski holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University and spent nearly a decade (1987–1996) as an aerospace design engineer at the Boeing Company before building Mag-Knight full time. He is the sole inventor of U.S. Patent 5,511,822 (granted April 30, 1996), a motorcycle tank pad made from precision-cut flexible magnetic sheet. Today he personally reviews incoming drawings for manufacturability at no charge, so design problems are caught before a die is built. His design rules are published in our Engineering Library.

Dustin Wolanski, Mechanical Engineer. Dustin holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington and has been a mechanical engineer at Mag-Knight since 2020, after four years (2015–2019) running our die-cutting presses and laser as a die and laser cutting operator. He has more than five years of engineering experience in the die and laser cutting industry and works in 2D and 3D CAD (SolidWorks, DeltaCad and A+) and CAM, turning customer drawings into steel rule die and laser cutting files. His time on the shop floor means drawings are reviewed by an engineer who has run the same equipment that will cut your parts.

Why Our Prices Are Lower

We own, not lease, our building, offices, and equipment. Competitors that lease have to build at least a 25% overhead margin into every bid. Our press time is $100 per hour; our closest competitor estimates its jobs at $150 per hour. We pass that difference on to customers, and we never charge setup fees. See the side-by-side examples on our pricing page.

Equipment and Quality

We cut on flatbed hydraulic die-cutting presses with steel rule dies, plus in-house laser cutting and CNC plasma cutting for materials a steel rule die cannot cut. Every run is checked with Statistical Process Control (SPC) sampling, and parts are measured on an OGP SmartScope optical measuring system that reads to 0.0001″. Measurements are available with every batch as part of our Certificate of Conformance (C of C).
